ALBANY – Charles W. Bennett Jr. 84, of Albany, passed away on Monday September 28, 2009 at his residence after a long illness.
He was born in Ellenville, NY and was the son of the late Charles and Ethel May Bennett Sr. and step son of William Gibbs Tansey. Charles served in the US Navy Coast Guard during WWII. In 1946, he played for the Boston Red Sox organization. He retired from NY State University in 1996. Charles was inducted in the Bleeker Stadium Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 for 24 years of dedication as a league player, manager of seven championship teams, umpire and groundskeeper. He was instrumental with the installation of lights and field enclosure at the stadium. He was an active member of Western Turnpike Golf Course and Albany County Curling Club. He enjoyed golfing, collecting baseball cards, bowling, carpentry and antique shopping.
Charles was predeceased by his wife, Emerica, his son William, his brother George and his sister Alice Lenhardt.
He is the beloved father of Patricia (Dan) Coyle, Susan (Carl) Kuhlmeier, Jeffery (Joan) Bennett, Deborah Bennett, John Bennett and Mark (Leisha) Bennett. He is the brother of Walter (Irene) Bennett and father in law of Betty Ann Bennett. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home.
