Charles "Chuck" Whalen Jr, 69, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at his home. Born in Albany, Charles was the son of the late Charles Sr and Joan (Weis) Whalen. He was also known to many as Charlie, Rick or "The Whale".
Charles was a graduate of Colonie Central HS. As a teenager, he was a volunteer fire fighter with Colonie Fire Dept. He went on to become a dispatcher in Albany County Civil Defense and in 1972 was sworn in as a Police Officer for the Albany Police Department. In his 38 years on the force, he served in Communications, TAC Squad, Division 1, and retired in 2009 as a Detective in CCCIU.
Charles was a member of the Elks Lodge #49 and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his son Kevin, along with former coworkers and friends. He loved his dogs, working on computers and watching reruns of Perry Mason.
Charles is survived by his wife Donna (VanBergen) Whalen, his son Kevin C. Whalen, His stepchildren Daniel (Kelly) Webster IV, Tracy Webster, Stephanie Webster, his grandchildren Micah Webster-Stewart, Madigan Webster, Daniel Webster V. and his dog Brimley
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY on Wednesday May 5, 2021 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Services will follow the calling hours with the Albany Elks Lodge #49 at 5:30 pm and the funeral service at 6:00 pm. Burial will be on Friday, May 7th at 1:30 pm at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie, NY.
Gathering size, within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
