COLONIE – Chester A. Vigars Jr.82, of Colonie, passed away on Tuesday June 4, 2013 at St. Peters Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in Colonie and was the son of the late Chester A. and Helen E. Broas Vigars Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Colonie. Chester was formerly employed at Tobin Packing Company and Sterling Winthrop Laboratories. He also worked alongside his father as owner and operator of the former Bel-Mar Motel in Latham. In 1985 he retired from South Colonie Central School District where he had worked as a bus driver.
Chester enjoyed playing cards and watching the harness races in Saratoga; most of all though he enjoyed farming. Chester first began working on his family's farm at a young age and later grew parsley, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and other vegetables on the farm he owned with his sons. Throughout his life he waged many battles against weeds and fought diligently to keep them from infringing on his crops. Nothing pleased him more than working to keep his fields in pristine condition.
He is the devoted father of Chester A. Vigars III and George (Cathy) Vigars. He is the grandfather of Katie Vigars. Chester is the brother of Edward (Millie) Vigars, Robert (June) Vigars, Ronald (Colleen) Vigars, Dorothy Weaver and the late John Vigars. He is also survived by Marion Vigars and several nieces, nephews and cousins
Funeral services will be private. There will be no calling hours. Entombment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204 in memory of Chester A. Vigars Jr.
