ALBANY – Cyrelia Halcyon Gonzalez passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 18, 2021 at the Teresian House in Albany, at the age of 106. She is now resting in the gentle hands of her Lord. She was born on February 9, 1915 in Mayo Village, Trinidad, West Indies, to the late Camello (Laddie) Gonzalez and Matilda Reyes.
She is survived by her son , Carlsbury Gonzalez (Patricia Triller) of Guilderland; a sister, Barbara (Babsie) James of Trinidad and dozens of relatives, including Joyce Martinez, Ava Gonzalez and Joyce Baldwin of Trinidad. She was predeceased by her brothers Acton, Melville and Otto Gonzalez.
She was a loving and devoted mother to her son. But she will also be remembered as a very loving and caring person who was a mother figure to many people during her lifetime including Dennis Gopaul, Rodney Foster, Marcia McBean, Jacqueline Rowe, Rachel Swammy, Marcia Maharaj and Enid Kirton, to name a few.
While in Trinidad, Cyrelia was primarily a homemaker. She emigrated to the United States in 1987 and worked at several local retail establishments including Sportique Women's Store and the Steinbach Department Store until her 80's. Cyrelia was of deep faith and attended Sunday services regularly at the Colonie Christian Life Center then later at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectady. At home, she read and studied her Bible daily. She was a very fashionable dresser and was always one of the best dressed ladies at church or any event she attended. She always wore a hat because she felt a woman was not fully dressed without one. She was a member of the Colonie Senior Citizens Center for several years and enjoyed taking bus trips, visiting several places including Plymouth Rock and the Amish country. Cyrelia was also very charitable having donated to several religious causes including EWTN, which was one of her favorite TV channels.
Many thanks to the staff at the Teresian House (Floor 2B) for the kind and compassionate care bestowed upon her during her stay there.
