Albany~
Dallen Maine "Flip" Filyaw, 87, of Albany passed away on January 21, 2019 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center due to complications from a stroke. He was born on March 26, 1931 in Rhoda, West Virginia, the son of the late Charles and Sarah Filyaw. His family moved to Kingsport, Tennessee where he lived until moving to New York State in 1948. He married Carolyn Morin on September 3, 1951. They celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2018.
Dallen was employed for 15 years by the A&P bakery until their closing. He then went to work for the New York Telephone company for 27 years until his retirement in 1993. Dallen loved his work and always kept a second job working at different times for the Willett Lunch and Smith Paper Company. He also served in the Army National Guard.
He enjoyed bowling in various leagues in the Albany area. For many summers, he was a familiar face at the Saratoga Race Track.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Albany; daughters Delaine (David) St. John of Milford, NY and Gayleen (James) Doyle of Albany; son, John (Ellie) Filyawof Beverly, MA; grandchildren Rebecca Baker, Jennifer Kotarides, Meghan (Tim) Fisher, Deborah (Kevin) Donnelly and Jonathan (Jessica) Doyle; and nine great-grandchildren. Dallen is also survived by brothers Alburn (Bonnie) and James (Bertyl) Filyaw; sister, Lydia (Bob) Ishler; sisters-in-law, Joanie, Kay and Wonnie Filyawand brother-in-law Paul Rossmaier, all of Washington State. He is also survived by brother-in-law Donald Morin of East Berne, NY.
Dallen was predeceased by his parents, brothers; Charles, Thurman and Raybur, sisters-in-law; Gwen and Natalie Morin; brother-in-law Robert Morin and grandson Aaron St. John.
The family wishes to thank Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, Albany Medical Center and Community Hospice for their excellent care.
