Daniel J. Crowe

December 21, 1947 — March 20, 2021

COLONIE - Daniel J. Crowe (73) passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021. Born in Albany on December 21, 1947, he was the son of the late Thomas F. Crowe and Helen (Kilmartin) Crowe. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Veronica (Volk) Crowe.

Dan graduated from the Vincentian Institute (VI), class of 1966; attended Le Moyne College and graduated from the State University at Albany with a B.A. and Master's in Education.

In Dan's early career, he was a well-respected English teacher at St. Pius X Catholic School, Sand Creek Middle School, and Colonie High School. Though he always stayed close to teaching, he left the field of education and ventured into the world of sales. Dan's easy going nature and congeniality was a perfect fit for sales. He could sell anything to anyone if they needed it or wanted it - from major appliances at Montgomery Wards to used cars, home security systems and Singer sewing machines. Dan applied his thirst for knowledge to his merchandise and sold his wares with honesty and integrity. He took great pride in the satisfaction of his customers.

His later career was capped by 20 years in public service, first at the New York State Energy Office and then at the Office of the State Comptroller. Employing his teaching background and strong analytical mind, he became a highly regarded trainer at the Comptroller's Office. By design or not, Dan became a mentor to many in the Comptroller's Office and many more payroll officers in various state agencies.

As a teenager, Dan had a good ear for a good pop voice, and he liked Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, Glenn Yarborough, and Neil Diamond. At that time, Dan sped around on a small motorcycle called a Honda, back in the no-helmet days. If that idea scared the daylights out of his parents, they never showed it. Dan's early love for music spilled over to his children who often recall his morning wake-up calls to them as an Irish tenor version of "Zip a dee doo dah", or it's time for bed with "Good night sweet-heart" Sha Na Na style.

At VI, Dan followed the lead of his sister Mary Ellen and wrote for the school newspaper, the Blue Banner. For each issue, he wrote a column that tracked the wild and funny misadventures of Trererang, a quirky and hard to pronounce character of Dan's imagination. Full records are still being checked, but it's likely Dan was the only humor columnist in Blue Banner history.

Dan's cousin Mary Lou was a Mercy High classmate of Veronica (Ronnie) Volk, and when Mary Lou introduced the two, Dan hit the jackpot. Here was a woman of beauty, smarts, kindness and strength. Dan and Ronnie married in 1969 and started their family in Albany.

Guided by his brother Tommy, Dan was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, through thick and thin. Shepherded by his father, Dan frequented Saratoga Racecourse and was a good, clever handicapper. On his own, Dan became an excellent golfer and long hitter, and enjoyed many fine rounds with his brothers Jim and Terry.

Dan was at his best at the holidays. Each Thanksgiving, for a large family gathering of 25+, he served up two turkeys with all the fixings and two hand-crafted, hearty, amazing soups. Dan always gave a thoughtful, heartfelt blessing that recounted family members' joys and challenges of that year. Each December, Dan enjoyed a special trip with his sister Katy, up to Oscar's Meats in Warrensburg to pick up the Christmas ham and enjoy the winter day together.

In addition to his wife Ronnie, Dan is survived by his three children and their spouses – Kelly and Dave Kuracina; Billy and Melissa Crowe; Brian and Beth Crowe. He was the devoted grandfather to Madison, Finn, Daniel and Kieran. He will be missed by his siblings Terry (Suzanne) Crowe, Mary Ellen (Tom) Griswald, Kathleen Crowe, and James Crowe, sister-in-law Nancy Crowe, cousin Mary Lou Garrett and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and grands. He was recently pre-deceased by his brother Tommy Crowe.

Services and burial will be private. Friends and family will be invited to join in a celebration of Dan's life at a later date. Share your memories of Dan with all that knew and loved him at www.NewComerAlbany.com
