David Hotaling

November 23, 1955 — July 1, 2017

Ravena — David Hotaling, age 61, died peacefully last week at his home in Ravena, NY.

David was a veteran of the United States Army, and a New York State Employee for 25 years. He grew up in Schenectady, NY and was the eldest child of Louis and Florence Hotaling. As a boy, he enjoyed tennis, football, and other outdoor activities. When he finished high school he enlisted in the United States Army and graduated top of his class from Officer Candidate School. David attended Utica College in Utica, New York and studied Business Administration.

David had a passion for mentoring his family, friends and was an especially beloved uncle. He enjoyed a good conversation and took the time to listen to all of his loved ones. David was an avid and impressive golfer. David had a brilliant mind and poured his talents into hobbies including carpentry and woodworking - by which his family benefitted. "Esse Quam Videri" was tattooed on David's arm which is a Latin phrase meaning "To be, rather than to seem (to be)." David admired when he and others could mirror their private lives with the persona they projected into the world.

Mr. Hotaling is survived by his four children, Melissa, Benjamin, Jacob and Anna, and 5 grandchildren. Also surviving are his four younger siblings, Karen Hood (Tom), Daniel Hotaling (Barbra), Jodene O'Malley (John) and Lisa Farina (Marco).

David was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial in his name will be held July 15, 2017 at 2 PM at the Sycamore Golf Course in Ravena.

Flowers are gracefully declined; friends and family wishing to contribute to the Alcoholics Anonymous Capital District Central Office in Albany, NY may do so, on his behalf.
