David "Honey" Schottenham

ALBANY- David “Honey” Schottenham, 81 of Albany, NY passed away peacefully at home with his friends by his side Monday. October 14, 2024. David was born on June 12, 1942 in Albany, NY. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Catherine (Kay) Roberts Schottenham. 

David’s mother Kay was one of the founders of the Albany County ARC. After David’s birth, she made it her mission to teach him all she could and create a meaningful day program. One lesson she developed was for David to practice his writing and reading skills. He looked forward to copying items each day from the Times Union newspaper. This is a hobby he continued throughout his life and he took great pride in.

Growing up, David’s family were close friends with the Froehlichs. Being he was an only child, and both his parents were only children, the friends became more like family. Kimberly Froelich-Swift was his lifelong friend, whom he cherished as a “sister”. He also had a brother-like bond with Steven and George Froelich.

David was formerly an employee of the Times Union for 13 years as a newspaper delivery boy. During this time, he collected all the dimes that were given to him or he earned. Over time, he was able to collect a considerable amount of money, all of which he donated back to The Times Union. This was just one of many stories he enjoyed retelling to those he around him. In 1972, he began attending the Albany ARC Day Treatment Program. In the spring of 2024, he retired from this position. 

David had many interests. He loved going to the Olive Garden or out for ice-cream. He often could be found enjoying watching Dr. Phil, soap operas or Church services on the television. Dave was a happy guy who loved asking people where they were hiding on him and joking around in general. 

Services will be held for David on Tuesday October 22, 2024 at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205 from 11AM to 12PM, a service at 12PM, with an interment to follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
