Berne – Denis J. Pettit, Sr., 96, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday September 24, 2014. Born and educated in Bronx, NY he is the son of the late Denis F. and Margaret Pettit.
Denis proudly and courageously served his country in the united States Marine Corp., in the Pacific Theatre, during WWII. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1972 after 35 years of service as a letter carrier in New York City and Long Island. Denis moved to Colonie in 1988 and was a member of St. Clare's Church, the AOH, VFW #8692 and the H.B. Kuhn Senior Center. Denis was an avid roller skating enthusiast and won many roller skating dancing awards.
Denis is survived by his current wife Ruth Pettit; his children, Denis (Marjorie) Pettit of Arizona, Patrick (Nancy) Pettit of Long Island and Brian (Cherie) Pettit of Berne; his 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousin George Blauvelt of Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Denis was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Caroline Pettit, his daughter Patricia Zalys and sisters, Catherine and Tisha.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Clare's Church, Monday September 29th at 9:00 a.m. Calling hours for Denis will be held on Sunday September 28th from 4-7 p.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Interment will be at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.
