Dennis A. Cerwonka

April 1, 1945 — December 15, 2014

Dennis Cerwonka, 69, passed away on December 15, 2014, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. Born on April 1, 1945, he was the son of the late Monica and Chester Cerwonka, and was a lifelong resident of Albany. His education at St. Joseph's Parochial School was the foundation for his unwavering faith. He was a former parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church and Christ The King Roman Catholic Church.

Dennis was employed as an ironworker for many years. He worked on various construction projects around the state, but primarily worked with the Ironworkers Local Union 12 crews on the construction of the Empire State Plaza buildings in downtown Albany. He was later employed by New York State until his retirement following 22 years of service.
Dennis had many interests. He enjoyed a variety of sports, especially bowling. As a young boy he did odd jobs in the neighborhood just to earn enough money to bowl a game or two, and he grew up to be an exceptionally talented bowler. He loved his family and looked forward to annual family vacations, especially trips to Disney World or those spent by the blue waters of the Carribean, getting together with friends on weekends for cookouts and outdoor games, and holidays celebrated with his entire family. He loved the Lake George region and its rich history, horseback riding at Lake Luzerne, and going to Saratoga Race Track in August. He loved music and had a beautiful voice. He had a natural gift for picking up an instrument and playing a tune by ear. He loved all animals and never lived a day without having a pet or two, especially those who were in need of a good home. He would find great pleasure in the simple things whether it was long walks, hiking in the Catskills, admiring the colors of fall foliage, picking apples at the orchard, or just watching the beauty of a sunset.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Robert Cerwonka, and his nephew Greg Cerwonka. Dennis is survived by his life partner, best friend and beloved wife of 43 years Gayle Cerwonka, his daughter Tammy (Jeff) Cercone whom he loved and cherished beyond measure, and his little grandson Caden Cercone who brought him so much joy and happiness. He also leaves behind his loving brother Chet Cerwonka of North Carolina, a nephew, nieces and several cousins.

Dennis was a good man with a huge heart. He had an outgoing personality and had many friends and would easily make new ones wherever he went. To his wife and daughter, he was the rock who would always be the calm during life's storms. They will miss him and love him always.

Special thanks to Dennis' physician Dr. G. Kronick and his nurse Barb for many years of outstanding care, and to St Peter's Hospice Inn for their kind and compassionate care.

In keeping with Dennis' wishes, there will be no calling hours, and services will be private.
