Dennis Joseph Mahony Sr, at 80 years of age, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2020, at home in Coeymans Hollow NY. He was born on October 22, 1939 in Albany, N.Y. to Robert and Signe Mahony. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Mahony Jr, his nephew Robert Mahony the 3rd, and his wife Noreen Mahony.
In 1964, at the age of 26, he was married to Henriette Rinfret, who he met on a ski trip to Manchester Vermont where a group of friends had rented a house for a week of alpine skiing. Dennis and Henriette were married for 15 years and lived in Delmar N.Y. with their two children Joan and Dennis Mahony Jr. Together they ran the family business, Albany Welding Supply. In 1973 they purchased their summer property in Coeymans Hollow, where he recently passed away. Dennis dabbled in painting through his early years, played piano, enjoyed golfing and fishing in summer, and alpine skiing in winter. He also enjoyed traveling with his family on holiday. He was a member of Wolferts Roost Country Club for many years, which he enjoyed immensely .
In 1988, Dennis Married his second wife, Noreen Mahony and was a caring husband to her until she passed away in 2013. He was a loving father to Noreen's daughter Sue Smi and her husband Gerry Smi and their children John Raymond and Jeff Smi. Dennis sold his business and lived out his dream of moving to Florida and living on a golf course with Noreen. There he took to painting full time and opened a frame shop and gallery. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing and going out to eat at fine restaurants. After some time, his wife, Noreen, became ill with emphysema, and they returned back to the Albany area to be closer to family. They bought a house in Colonie and he turned his basement into his art studio. Once settled in, he took to his art studio even more seriously, and spent many hours everyday painting. He was part of the Colonie Art Association and Albany Art League. Dennis participated in many painting classes, shows and contests in the northeast. In his later years he honed his painting skills and became a skilled landscape painter. He spent long quiet hours in his art studio painting scenes that he'd photographed from nature. His paintings were mostly of dreamy, idyllic landscapes that he made by combining the photographs he'd taken into well balanced compositions. In one of his last showings, he had one of his paintings shown at his favorite gallery in Vermont, Tilting at Windmills Gallery in Manchester.
In his later years, Dennis lived at the Beltrone Senior apartments and then the Guilderland Atria, as he declined due to dementia. At the Atria, he was a beloved member of the community and enjoyed the company of his last companion, Lois. Dennis and Lois dined together and spent most of their time in each other's loving company. During this time, Dennis enjoyed going out for lunch at the Chinese Buffet in Guilderland and the Boat House Grill in New Baltimore on the Hudson River with his children.
In 2018 and 2019, Dennis underwent several surgeries that ultimately resulted in a health crisis which sent in to Memorial Hospital and then to the Barnwell Nursing home as he was no longer able to live independently at the Atria. It was determined that he had 2 days to 2 weeks to live and was put under hospice care. This experience was so horrible that arrangements were made to bring Dennis home to his Daughter Joan's home in Coeymans Hollow. She hired a crew of caregivers and with the undeniably excellent care of his hospice nurse, Leah Plant, and his private aides, Gloria, Cheryl, Sharon, Stacy, Andi, and Kristen, he lived eleven months with dignity and loving care. His last year was full of music and art, animals and friends. His paintings were hung throughout the house and admired by all who saw them. The idyllic farm life he had tasted in his early years was exemplified at Magic Forest Farm and embraced him in his last year with a quality unmatched anywhere. Dennis enjoyed the daily visits by the resident chickens, ducks, peacocks, cats, dogs, and friendly pot belly pig who he called the 'fat dog'. He often admired the view of the lotus pond, and distant Adirondack mountains. He was amused by and often laughed at the friendly animals. His aides made his last year full of dignity, joy and kindness. Dennis was 'the rooster with all his doting hens'. His most spoken words were 'thank you', and they were also his last.
Dennis passed away peacefully in his sleep with his caregivers and family close by. He is missed by all who cared for him.
Dennis is survived by His daughter Joan Mahony, his son Dennis Mahony Jr, his step daughter Susan Smi, his step son in law Gerry Smi and his grandchildren John Raymond, Jeff Smi and his wife Katie Smi.
A private family service will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, New York.. He will be buried at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, next to his wife Noreen Mahony.
