Dietbald "Dieter" R. Scholer

August 12, 1943 — February 26, 2025

Dietbald "Dieter" R. Scholer, 81, proudly born in Germany to the late Rudolph and Hildegard Scholer, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 in Guilderland.

After being trained as a chef in Europe, he immigrated to the United States at a young age to pursue the great American dream. He later served in the United States Army which he took great honor in. He started his journey as a chef on Long Island at Westbury Manor. After further developing his culinary skills there, he opened his own restaurant in Smithtown, New York. He was the head chef and owner of the "Smithtown Haus" for over 30 years. The authentic German continental cuisine was revered by patrons and received many accolades. Shortly after retiring, he moved upstate to "the cabin," his second home that he built and vacationed with family and friends.

Dieter's interest in aviation led him to acquire his pilot's license. His appreciation of American culture led to his love of Harley Davidson and the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed soccer, especially rooting for the German national team during the World Cup. He also challenged himself with hobbies such as chess, cards, and small motor engines. Later in life, he became passionate about outdoor activities such as gardening and maintaining his vast property. Into his late 70s, Dieter could be found splitting wood and cutting down trees with his collection of chainsaws.

He is survived by his two sons, Marc (Amy) Scholer and Christopher (Keri) Scholer, two grandchildren, Charles and Catherine, four sisters, Anneliese, Edith, Hedda (Horst), and Gudrun as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his first wife, Katherine and his beloved pets Fritz, Dumpling and Heidi.
