LATHAM - Donald E. Perras passed away peacefully on December 13, 2013 at his home after a long illness.
Born in Cohoes on May 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Albert J. Perras and Edna M. Webb Perras. He grew up in Cohoes before moving to Latham in 1985. Don was a graduate of LaSalle Institute, Class of 1962, received his Associates Degree from Hudson Valley Community College and attended Siena College before entering the Army in 1966, spending his tour of duty in Germany accompanied by his wife. Don worked at Behr-Manning in Watervliet and Garden Way in Troy before retiring from the Watervliet Arsenal after 18 years as an assembler.
He was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed going to many car shows in his prized '57 Chevy along with his good car buddies Dave, Bruce and Paul.
Most of all Don enjoyed his summer vacations with his family at the Outer Banks. He loved the peace and tranquility of the ocean, where he could be found relaxing on the beach "working on his tan".
Don leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of 46 years, Paula; his most cherished daughter and the pride of his life, Kristin (Tom) Leonard; sister Carolyn (Thomas) Baker and several nieces and nephews.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff of The Community Hospice of Albany with special thanks for the wonderful care given by nurse Terry and aide Nettie, who made it possible for Don to remain in his home during his illness. They are truly very special people who will never be forgotten.
Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank our dear friend Ann Patrick for all of her care, love and support of Don every step of the way. Ann is Navy through and through, but we won't hold that against her.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Don's memory to The Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, N.Y. 12205, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie on Tuesday, December 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, December 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
