Albany – Donald E. Welch, Sr., 87, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Hospice Inn at St. Peter's. He was born in Albany on April 12, 1927, the son of Loretta Bryan and Edward Welch.
Don attended Christian Brothers Academy, and was a graduate of Nichols College. He served proudly with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
His career as a commercial realtor and broker began in 1958 with Picotte Realty. In 1979, he formed Donald E Welch Real Estate, where he was still active until recently. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Albany County Board of Realtors, the New York State Board of Realtors, and headed the Board of Assessors for the City of Albany. He held SIOR and CIREB designations.
"Don enjoyed skiing, boating and water skiing on Lake George, where he spent many wonderful summers and once water skied the entire length of Lake George and back. Above all, Don cherished his family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jane Ward. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Terre Joan McAllister Gayton Welch, his children, Don (Diane) of Latham, Bryan (Beverly) of West Palm Beach, Maria (Roger) LaGrassa of Daytona Beach, Victor (Barbara) of Wynantskill, Steven (Melanie) of Slingerlands, Kyle, of Sunnyvale, CA, and Tara, of Albany. Also survived by grandchildren: Christopher (Jill), Rebecca, Rachel (Stephen) Pracher, Meghan (Ryan) O'Dougherty, Melissa (Joseph) Mahoney, Kevin, Dylan and Hannah; great-grandchildren: Tyler, Lucy Mahoney and Hadley Pracher.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Saratoga National Cemetery.
