Guilderland– Donald F. Elston, 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, with his loving family by his side. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Frederick and Katherine Elston.
Donald served for the U.S. Coast Guard as a young man. He worked for the US Postal service for 40 years and retired in 1997.
Donald enjoyed vacationing with his family, spending quality time at their horse stable with family and friends. He was a member of the New Scotland Beagle Club- breeding and training Beagles. In his day he was an avid gardener and hunter. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Ontario with Evelyn on their boat.
Along with his parents, Donald was predeceased by his brother, David Elston.
He will be missed by his beloved wife of 56 years Evelyn Elston; his children, Donald Elston Jr., Deborah (Bo Weidman) Elston, Donna (William) Miller; grandchildren, Brian Miller, Valerie (Seamus) Clapp, David (Caitlin) Elston, Victoria Gehman, and Nicole Gehman; great-grandchildren, Lily Riley, Wyatt Clapp, and Gracie Elston; a sister Barbara Hahn; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all of the love, prayers and care from Our Lady of Mercy.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2016 from 11-1pm at New Comer Funeral Home, Colonie. A service will immediately follow at 1pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
