COHOES - Donald Gula, 67, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born on September 30, 1950 in Cohoes and was the son of the late Matthew and Helen (Brzuska) Gula. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1970 to 1972, attaining the rank of Seaman. He worked for the NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles in Albany for 37 years, retiring as an Appeals Board Clerk in 2005. After that he was a chef for the Colonie Elks for eight years. He was an avid NY Yankees and NY Giants fan, and enjoyed home improvement projects and cooking. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. Colonie Elks, where he served in multiple offices including Exalted Ruler, State VP, District Deputy and most recently Lodge Advisor. He was also a member of the Cohoes Knights of Columbus where he was a Past Grand Knight for three of those years, the American Legion Post in Halfmoon, and the Polish American Association in Cohoes.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Marianne (Donovan) Gula; his devoted children, Rachel (Cliff Bird) Marer of Cohoes and Edward Gula of Melbourne, FL; his cherished grandchildren, Jakob, Joshua and Madelyn Marer; his sister, Charlotte (Ron) St. Gelais and several sisters- and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.
An Elks Service will be held on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet. Calling hours will precede the service from 4 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to JDRF, 950 New Loudon Rd, Ste 330, Latham, NY 12110 or to Colonie Elks ENF, 11 Elks Lane, Latham, NY 12110 in memory of Donald Gula.
