Schenectady- Donald Latimer, 91, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2016 at Capital Living Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Schenectady. The son of the late Frederick A. and Viola (Younghanz) Latimer, Don was born on July 23, 1925 in Pittsfield, MA.
A proud veteran of the US Navy, Don was a survivor of the D-Day invasion. He served on the USS Barnett APA-5 and the USS Toucan AM-387. While in the service from 1942-1946 he earned the WWII Victory Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 bronze stars, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars, The American Campaign Medal, The Occupation Service Medal, The Combat Action Ribbon and The Normandy Jubilee of Liberty Medal.
Don worked for the United States Post Office as a mechanic until his retirement in 1982. For more than 25 years, Don was a volunteer at the Albany VA.
Don is survived by his children: Donna (Bob) Krisanda of Guilderland, Deborah (Dan Fisher) VanWie of Schenectady, Frederick Latimer of Surfside Beach, SC, Richard (Tammy) Latimer of Surfside Beach, SC, James (Julie) Latimer of Colonie and Gail Streich of Albany; his 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9am to 10:30am on Thursday, September 22 at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A funeral service will be held at 10:30am at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
