Donald "Sam" Wayfield, 87, (Troy) began his journey home on January 30, 2007 at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness. Sam was born in Ashland, ME, Sept 6, 1919 to Caleb and Lena Wakefield.
As a young boy, he picked potatoes, worked in a sawmill, joined the C.C.C., and then proudly served 22 years in the Navy, surviving the bombing of Pearl Harbor on the USS Nevada. Subsequently serving on the USS Macon, Ware, and Dealey, retiring as Chief Gunner's Mate. Don worked in the maintenance department of Samaritan Hospital for 14 years, and then returned as a volunteer.
He was a major contributor to the Troy Soup Kitchen, Shriners' Hospital, St. Joseph's Indian School, Clothe-A-Child, C.A.R.E., and American Red Cross. Sam will be remembered for his great stories, his generosity, golf ball dogs, and walnut strawberries.
He is survived by one sister, Helen Wakefield, nieces and best friends, Leslie Felczak (his manager) and Lindsay Bockis, and nephews Floyd and Matt Wakefield, Joe Sr., Fred, Joe Jr., Jason, Greg, and Andrew Bockis.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 AM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden.
