ALBANY – Donna V. Christmas, 72, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, after attending a class reunion.
Born January 5, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Althea J. (Jackson) Christmas. Donna received her B.S. degree from Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee, and her M.S. from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York.
Donna came to Albany in 1965 and enjoyed a 31-year teaching career, beginning as a science teacher at Philip Schuyler High School (three years), then 28 years as a 7th grade science teacher in the South Colonie School District. During her years at South Colonie, she was active in the local and state Teachers Unions (South Colonie Teachers Association and New York State United Teachers) as a union representative and as an instructor/consultant with the NYSUT Education and Learning Trust. Following her retirement from South Colonie in 1997, Donna continued her work as a staff developer, both independently and through NYSUT, teaching graduate, undergraduate, and inservice courses and presenting workshops on a variety of topics and initiatives in education.
Donna leaves behind her beloved daughter, Chana Meira Golden, of Albany, New York, and a number of relatives, including her sister, Elizabeth C. Caswell of Cordova, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Burkeley.
At Donna's request, there will be no services.
