Doris C. Rand of Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (Scotia, NY) left this life to join her husband in heaven on Monday, January 19, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday a week earlier. Born on January 10, 1923 in New York City, Doris grew up in New York and lived there until her marriage to Curtis James Rand in 1945 when she moved to New Jersey. She lived most of her married life in Roselle Park, moving to Toms River upon her retirement.
Doris had a successful secretarial career with positions in a bank, church, school, and several businesses. She retired from Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals (Kenilworth, NJ).
A loving and devoted wife and mother, Doris particularly enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, watching soap operas, and growing African violets. In her later years, as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Toms River, NJ, she especially enjoyed Sunday lunches with a group of church friends.
Predeceased by her husband in 2005, Doris moved to Guilderland, NY in 2009 to live with her daughter Janet. In February 2013 she moved to Baptist Health. Her survivors include two daughters, Janet VanNostrand (Larry) of Guilderland, NY, and Patricia Lewandowski (Joseph) of Whitehouse Station, NJ; five grandchildren, Eric VanNostrand, Lisa Lambert (Thomas), Kevin VanNostrand (Jenny), all of Schenectady, NY, and Joseph Lewandowski and Lindsay Lewandowski, both of Austin, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan VanNostrand and Kaylee VanNostrand.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 7:00 PM.
