Albany- Doris G. Murphy, 98, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at the Albany County Nursing Home. She was born in Deansboro, NY, June 16, 1908 the only daughter of Frank and Mabel Gallup. Doris attended local schools and was a graduate of Clinton, NY High School where a few years ago she attended her 75th high school reunion with a few others. She attended Albany State Teachers College prior to her marriage to Donald B. Murphy of Malone, NY. As a young widow in 1944, she embarked on a successful career as a single parent of three sons. Doris achieved professional status in occupations including dietician, Director of the former Sunset Home for the Aged in Utica, NY, plus many years as an industrial cafeteria entrepreneur at the former Bendix Corp. plant in Utica. She served as president of the Business and Professional Women's Organization in Utica.
Upon retiring, she moved to the Albany area and was a Guilderland resident for many years. She was active in Emmaus United Methodist Church (Calvary Pine Hills UMC) and made many new friends. She was President of the church's United Methodist Women's Group for several years.
Doris is survived by her sons, Edmund of Wareham, MA, James of Niskayuna, NY, Louis of Latham, NY and daughter-in-law Patricia Murphy of Latham. Grandchildren are Kyra Duhamel of Woonsocket, RI, Jonathan Murphy of Somerville, Ma, Paul Cady of Bethlehem, PA, Kenneth Murphy of Manlius, NY, Steven Murphy of Victor, NY, Deborah Dal Pos of Saratoga Springs, NY, Mark Murphy of Tacoma, WA, David Murphy of Latham, NY and Melanie Shader of Latham, NY. There are also eight great-grandchildren.
Doris remained a staunchly independent and self-sufficient woman her entire life. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a strong, loving lady – a "Mother" to many. She was "wonderful".
The family wants to thank the staff of the Albany County Nursing Home and the Community Hospice of Albany for their caring service.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, Latham, NY on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM. Interment will be in the Deansboro, NY Cemetery on Saturday, May 19th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Albany, 445, New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205 or to the Emmaus United Methodist Church, 715 Morris Street, Albany, NY 12208, in memory of Doris G.
