It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy (Dot, Lil'Sis, Mema) M. Carter announce her sudden passing on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Albany Medical Center at the age of 71.
Daughter of the late Lula Mae Lacy, Dorothy grew up in a large family and started her career at Neil Hellman School/Parsons Child & Family Center as an Integration Specialist. She was known to handle every situation with care and concern for every party involved. She had strong skills in active listening and validation of the feelings of staff and students.
During her over 30 years of service, she was awarded the Elizabeth Campbell Award for her human approach to her work. Years after retirement, she still made herself available to students as a listening ear.
After retirement, most days you could find Dorothy caretaking and spoiling her granddaughters, watching Daytime soaps, the Sci-Fi channel or Lifetime. Dorothy would spend her weekends early morning shopping with family or at a casino, if she got a chance.
Mostly, she enjoyed being home surrounded by her family. After her mother's passing, Dorothy became the matriarch of the family and was a gracious host during all holidays. Also on most weekends, family and friends could be found playing Spades or Tunk around her table. She was everyone's teacher, helper, friend, support and more.
Dorothy was kind, even if provoked, she was helpful without being judgmental, she was giving and selfless and when she was praised, she was humble and dismissive. She was always willing to give and she never needed a thank you. She was the truest definition of unconditional love, she let her family find their own way through the darkness, but Dorothy was their guiding light.
She was predeceased by her eldest daughter Bettina and three brothers JW, Archie and Robert. Dorothy will be forever remembered and loved by her lifelong partner Walter Tune, her daughter Joy (David)Pacifico, and two adorned granddaughters Cadence and Charlee; and also by her siblings Mary Lou Ellis, Deborah Hines, Naomi Lacy, Patricia McNeil (Richard), Mary Nobles, James, Johnny, Willie, Otis and their wives, in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will only be a private service for family at the Graceland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or the Albany Medical Center the COVID-19 Response Fund.
