ALBANY – Dorothy "Dot" C. Coleman, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at The Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital.
Dorothy was born on July 23, 1916 in Cohoes and was the daughter of the late Francis and Malvina (Chabot) Kilventon. Dorothy was raised in Cohoes and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1933. She retired from Watervliet High School in 1985 where she was a secretary for many years. She had also worked for the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, The Troy Record at their Watervliet office and for Montgomery Wards. She was a parishioner of Christ the King Church and a former longtime member of Sacred Heart of Mary parish in Watervliet, where she had been a longtime resident before moving to Menands, then Albany.
Dorothy had a zeal for life and possessed that rare quality of enjoying life for the small joys it has to offer. Traveling the world or having expensive possessions were not aspects of life that were appealing to Dorothy. Instead, she enjoyed the pleasures of every day life. Cleaning her house until it sparkled like a showcase. Breakfast and relaxing on the patio on a warm summer day. Getting away to Florida for a winter respite to visit her son. Socializing with her many friends. But mostly, she loved nothing more than spending time with her family and especially visiting with her grandchildren on Long Island. She took great joy in all her family's accomplishments and was always there to provide advice and support or to simply share a story or a laugh. Dorothy was always quick to laugh, and the twinkle in her eyes represented a charm and love of life that drew people to her. Her warmth and generosity were always directed to everyone she met. She leaves behind many loving family and friends who she has blessedly touched and who will cherish her memory.
Dorothy is survived by her loving sons, Bill Coleman of Troy, Dick Coleman and his wife Lucille of Mt. Sinai, NY and Tom Coleman of Albany; her grandchildren, Rick and his wife Viktoriya, Caroline and Brett Coleman and two great-grandchildren, Ksenia and Nicholas Coleman. She was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 39 years, William Coleman.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumpter Ave., off of Western Ave., East of Rte. 155, Albany. Interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Cohoes.
Calling hours will be held at the church on Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. The parish family will gather at 6:00 p.m. for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
