TROY – Sunrise September 24, 1934 – Sunset August 18, 2012. Dorothy M. Keels, "Mama", passed away peacefully at the age of 77. She was born in Greeleyville, SC and moved to Troy in 1965. She retired from High Gate Manor and served as both usher and President of the church choir while attending St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1950, Dorothy entered into marriage with Phillip Keels, Sr. and their marital union led to seven children: Virginia (Charles) Pompey, Phillip (Sheena) Keels, Jr., Winnie Mae (Ronald) Dukes, O'Neil (Nadine) Keels and Jeanette, Johnny and Rosa Keels, all of Troy. Also surviving are four siblings; Annie Mae Canty, Betty Pompey and Bennie Canty, Jr., all of Troy and Thelma Rogers of Greeleyville, SC as well as fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Annie Mae and Bennie Canty; her husband, Phillip Keels, Sr. and her sisters, Ruby Footman and Mary Canty. Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt was very well known for her homemade baked goods at family gatherings.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 2900 Fifth Ave., Troy. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
