On Sunday afternoon June 4th, 2017, (14 years to the day of her mother's passing), after a brief illness, the angels came to escort Dorothy Ann Mennies home to the waiting arms of the Lord. Dorothy was born May 22, 1943 to the late Willie and Marie (Braylock) Mennies in Kalamazzo, Michigan. Dorothy moved to Okolona, Mississippi with her grandmother, where she lived until she was seven. Then she relocated to Albany, NY to be with her mother. She attended Albany Public School Systems. She worked for the V.A. Hospital and later for the NYS education Department in the Professional Licensing Unit until her retirement in 1998.
Dorothy loved her family. She leaves to cherish her memory her companion of 40 years Windel Watson; her loving children: Michael Johnson of Florida and Robin Johnson of Albany, NY; two grandchildren: Ricky Burton of Albany, NY, and Ramaliah Johnson of Saratoga County. Five stepchildren, Betty (Cliff), Yvonne, Paul, Bobby, and Earl. Sixteen step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her Goddaughters, Jackie Polk of Albany, NY, Ebony Houze of Maryland and Shannissa Leachman of Georgia. She also leaves to cherish a special cousin Willie Earl Nabors of Milwaukee, WI, Special nieces, Valerie (Nate) Stevens, Kaleena, Kelinde, and Darnelle. Special friends, Carolyn Polk, Diane Carter, and "The Golden Girls" Yvonne and Cora, Portia Headspeth and Lyda Mae Peters. She is also survived by several adopted children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Visitation will be from 9 am to 11 am on Saturday, June 10 at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A funeral service will be held at 11 am at the funeral home. Interment immediately following the service in Memory Gardens, Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Colonie, NY.
