Dorothy R. Matthews

Troy- Our beloved mother, sister, grandmother Dorothy R. Matthews passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016. Dot was born on February 25, 1926 to the late Hazel (Walker) and Myers Smith. She was predeceased by her husband James R. Matthews Sr.
Dot cherished spending time with her family and in her later years became a world traveler enjoying family cruises and vacations in the Bahamas, Disney World and Virginia Beach. She also enjoyed watching old movies, casino trips with her sister and son and BBQ's at her daughter's home which became known as the "summer home of the Smith sisters." Dot was admired for her strength and beautiful heart.
Dorothy is survived by her children James R. Matthews Jr. and Robin (James) Farrell and her best friend and sister, Beverly Smith. She is also survived by her two granddaughters: Courtney (Michael) Morris and Ashley (Douglas) Nathe and step-grandchildren James (Gwen) Farrell Jr. and Matthew Farrell; her cherished great-grandchildren: Hayden Allen Nathe and Harper Madison Morris along with several nieces and nephews. Dot was the dear friend of Marta Atkinson.
The family would like to thank the staff and administration at the Springs Nursing Home in Troy for the loving care they provided to Dorothy.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday, June 14 at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
Donations in Dorothy's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital are appreciated.
