GARLAND, TX - Douglas W. Smith, 51, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 7, 2016. Born in Albany, he was the son of Joan M. Smith and the late Clifton G. Smith. He graduated from Colonie Central High School in 1982. Doug joined the Army in 1984 and served 7 years as a Sergeant-E5 in both the USA and Europe. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1990. Doug then became a communications specialist and transferred to the Dallas area in 1994. He was currently employed by Verizon as a software engineer at the time of his passing. His passions included hunting with his father, ice hockey and billiards pool. He served in the N.E. Dallas APA as both an exceptional player and referee at the local and national levels. Doug was an avid Dallas Stars fan.

In addition to his loving mother, Doug is survived by his longtime devoted companion, Heather Reid of Texas; his brother, Greg (Tracey) of Colonie; his uncle, William Smith and sons, Chad (Jo Ellen) and Clarke (Casey); his aunt, Mary French and sons, Mark (Angela) and Scott (Joey); his aunt, Shirley (Peter) DeStafano; his first wife, Sherrie Smith and his stepson, Mark Reynolds. He was also predeceased by his sister, Jennifer Smith and his uncle, Gary French.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
