GUILDERLAND - Dr. Arthur Z. Loesch passed away on April 5, 2012 surrounded by family at his home, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Loesch was born in Lvov, Poland on June 29, 1942. He was the son of the late Irene (Kaczmar) Zlobnicki and Casimir Loesch. Dr. Loesch lost his father at an early age, and was raised by his late stepfather, Bruno Zlobnicki. He received a B.S. in Honors Physics in 1965 from the University of Montreal, and a Ph.D. in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from the University of Chicago in 1973. He did his post-doctorate work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO. In 1973 he accepted a faculty position at SUNY Albany in the Atmospheric Science Department, where he worked until his retirement in 2007. He was an internationally recognized expert in the field of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics and was the author of numerous articles published in The Journal of Atmospheric Science, Tellus, and the European Journal of Mechanics. While on sabbatical from SUNYA, he had the opportunity to teach at Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL in 1979 and at the University of Stockholm, Sweden in 1997. Dr. Loesch was a natural born educator and became a mentor and great friend to many students throughout the years.
He was an ardent audio enthusiast and was a member of the Catskill and Adirondack Audio Society in Albany. He was a primary source and consultant for Western Electric Sound, a two volume book published by Japan's Stereo Sound Magazine. In 1999, he partnered with Joe Levy and founded Tempo Electric. The company produces amplifier and preamplifier designs for life-like, in-home musical reproduction. His designs, considered a perfect blend of science and art, have been published in various magazines such as Stereophile, Bound-for-Sound and Sound Practices.
Dr. Loesch had many passions, especially entertaining family and friends with his Polish culture and cuisine, good music, fine wine and stimulating conversation. He enjoyed foreign movies, hiking, biking, skiing and photography. He traveled extensively with his family and took great pleasure in learning about different cultures. He was fluent in several languages but had a special fondness for the French language and culture.
