Colonie- Dr. Cecilia Natalia Sanz, 88, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Saturday afternoon, December 19, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family and friends . She was born in La Habana, Cuba on July 17, 1932. The daughter of Arturo Sanz and Luisa Casuso,Dr. Sanz is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her beloved best friend of 52 years, Matilde Arias; her two daughters, Idania Hooker and Alina Parrera; four grandchildren and great grandchildren; her adored godchild, Vincent Oscar Muniz; and her dedicated nephew, Carlos Acosta Sanz; and other family members in Cuba and Florida.
She received a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1954 and a Doctorate of Medicine in 1965 from Havana University. In December of 1967, she left Cuba and came to the United States with her two young children seeking freedom from Castro's Regime. In 1973 she became a United States citizen and joined the United States Department of Agriculture as a Veterinary Medical Officer. She was instrumental in the implementation of the Animal Welfare Act, prompting her move to Albany where the Northeastern Regional Office was located. She was an advocate for Affirmative Action. Dr. Sanz received many commendations and performance awards over her years of services, before her retirement in July of 1993. Immediately upon retirement, she immersed herself into the Albany community via Centro Cívico Hispanoamericano, Inc. where she volunteered as the Executive Director and CEO for 15 years. Dr. Sanz was a member of the NYS Governors' Advisory Council for the Office for the Aging. Her contributions to the Capital Region Community in particular to the Hispanic/Latino population were inspired by her life.
Our family would like to thank The Community Hospice in Albany, the Alzheimer's Association, and the many friends, doctors, nurses, and home health aides that provided care and support to Dr. Sanz and our family over the last several years. As per her wishes, her remains will be cremated and there will be no visitations or funeral services. Those wishing to remember Dr. Cecilia N. Sanz may want to follow her lead by doing a random act of kindness for someone in need.
