Dr. David R. Steindorf

January 27, 1939 — April 12, 2024

Dr. David R. Steindorf, PhD, a beacon of humor, dedication, and warmth left this world on April 12th, 2024 at the age of 85 years young. Throughout his life he radiated an infectious personality that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In the early 1960s, David's journey intertwined with that of his soulmate, Karen Steindorf, forging a bond that endured the test of time until his last breath. Together they embraced life's adventures and nurtured their family with unwavering love and devotion.
In 1975, David and Karen embarked on a new chapter. They relocated from Illinois to Staten Island, where they expanded their family with the adoption of their cherished daughter, Theresa South.

Their journey led them to Albany, New York, where they found not only a new home but also a vibrant community that embraced them wholeheartedly. David and Karen flourished in Albany, immersing themselves in its culture and forming lasting friendships.
David's legacy extended beyond his immediate family, as he welcomed the joy of grandkids into his life. From Brandon Emory, with whom he shared a love for humor and artistic expression, to Genevieve South, who inherited his passion for music and folk culture, and Connor South, whose dedication to sportsmanship and hard work earned David's deepest admiration, each grandkid held a special place in his heart.
As the years passed, David embraced the role of a great-grandpa with boundless love and joy, cherishing every moment with his beloved Gigi South.

Throughout his life's journey, David pursued knowledge with a fervent passion, earning his doctorate degree as a testament to his dedication to learning and growth. David Steindorf's career journey was marked by dedication and passion for helping others. Beginning at Manteno Illinois State Hospital, he found not only his calling but also his life partner, Karen Steindorf. Then in 1975 he was recruited by New York State to do inpatient staff training under a Federal Court order in the infamous "Willowbrook" case. In 1981 he was relocated by New York State to Albany where he was eventually appointed to the position of Associate Commissioner for the NY State Department of Developmental Disabilities. With two decades of service at OMRDD he embarked on his own psychology practice, where his commitment to his patients never wavered until his retirement in 2020. Transitioning to tele-therapy showcased his adaptability and continued dedication to mental health care. Beyond his professional endeavors, David shared his expertise as a state university professor at Empire State College, enriching the lives of future psychologists. His altruism extended to volunteering at retirement homes and hospitals, embodying his love for making a difference in the lives of others.

David Steindorf's life was shaped by profound love and enduring bonds, none more significant than those with his family. His parents, Robert and Marion Steindorf, instilled in him values of compassion and resilience. Tragically, the loss of his beloved sister, Susan Dingler, and her cherished husband, Dan Dingler, left an indelible mark on David's heart. Their marriages, spanning over 40 years, were a testament to enduring love, shared passions for the arts, and a thirst for exploration through travel. David and Susan were not only siblings but also best friends, their bond strengthened by shared experiences and a mutual appreciation for life's beauty. Despite their passing, the memories they created together, and the art they cherished, remained etched in David's soul, a constant reminder of the love and joy they brought into his life.

David's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to family will continue to inspire generations to come.
