Dr. Joseph Bowman, 62, entered into eternal life at Ellis Hospital April 10, 2013. Dr. Bowman was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Joseph and Violetta Bowman.
He attended the University at Albany where he earned his bachelor's degree in Africana Studies and Sociology in 1972 and his masters in Library Science and Secondary Education in 1975. Dr. Bowman continued his education at Teacher's College, Columbia University where he pursued other masters in Educational Technology in 1983 and Computer and Education in 1984 and a doctorate in Communications and Technology in Education in 1991. He was elected to the New York State Board of Regents in 2001. Dr. Joseph "OJ" Bowman was a great human contributor to education and social issues in New York State. He continuously served as an advocate and spearheaded long and endless efforts for minority and economically disadvantage students to ensure their inclusion in the revolution of educational technology.
Dr. Joseph Bowman Jr. leaves to cherish in his memory his wife Etwin, daughters, Amber and Alicia and his brother, William. His niece Aliyah Bowman, his cousin Idena Burnett Baker, father-in-law Rudolph Mapp, brother-in-law Ricardo Mapp, sisters-in-law Anita Mapp-Davis and Michele Reed-Bowman and a large extended family will all live to cherish fond memories.
Joseph is predeceased by his parents Violetta and Joseph Bowman.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 am at Macedonia Baptist Church, 26 Wilson Ave., Colonie. Calling hours will precede the service from 8:00 to 11:00 at the church. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
