Earle C. Smith, 91 passed away on March 25, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Earle was born in Norwich, New York, the son of the late Vinson Smith and Dorothy Alice (Barnes) Smith.
He attended Norwich High School and graduated from University of Massachusetts with a degree in accounting.
Between high school and college he served in the US Navy for 3 ½ years as a gunner mate on merchant ships. His principal job was protecting ships in convoys carrying men and war materials.
Merchant ships had no protection from submarines in the European theater or planes in the pacific theater, during early years of war. The men who protected supply ships were known as member of the armed guard. Earle is entitled to military ribbons, European theatre, pacific, liberation of Philippines, good conduct. Following honorable discharge from the Navy and graduation from college he was hired by the New York State Department of Audit and Control as a junior auditor. After achieving promotions he transferred to the Division of the Lottery as head of the audit unit. In 1965 he met and married Esther Korman in the first reformed church in Albany and enjoyed 49 years together.
Earle and Esther liked to travel and made 6 trips to different countries to learn customs and culture. Most of their travel was to the low land countries as Esther had a background of these countries and Earle's grandparents were from the Netherlands. Retiring in 1981 he decided to leave Albany to live in Florida.
Settling in Daytona Beach and becoming restless with lots of time on his hand decided to become a real estate broker. After passing the brokers exam he opened an office, with a partner, in Daytona Beach and specialized in condominium sales and rentals. In 2006 Earle's partner died and earl sold the real estate office and decided to really retire this time. After selling the real estate office he devoted most of his time to fishing
In 2008 he decided to return north due to his wife's declining health and returned to Troy to be near to her family.
He was a member of the armed guard B unit of US Navy, the brotherhood of elks 56 years in 2015 and a
Life member of veteran of foreign wars.
In addition to his wife Esther, he is predeceased by his 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
He is survived by his brother, Norman Smith of Norwich, NY; he is also survived by many close family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 1:00 pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. Calling hours will precede the funeral service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in St. Matthews Cemetery, Delmar.
