GUILDERLAND - Edison J. Nunez Jr., 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Edison was born on November 9, 1922 in Jacksonville, FL, he was the son of the late Edison J. and Elba Garelli Nunez. He attended Jacksonville J.C., Bard College (Annandale) and John Marshall Law School, Atlanta, GA. Edison entered the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor and progressed to agent, supervisor and managerial positions in a Regional Office and Washington, D.C. headquarters, where he headed the examination programs for tax exempt organizations before assuming the Albany position of Examination Chief in 1972. Between IRS assignments Edison was assigned to the US Aid missions in Seoul, South Korea and Panama, as head of the Tax Administration Advisory Teams to the host governments. Following retirement in 1981 he was recruited by the International Executive Service Corps as a volunteer Tax Administrator Advisor to the government of Grenada at St. Georges.

As a collateral duty to his Albany position, he was involved in Equal Employment Opportunity Programs promoting Hispanic employment. His work was recognized by the Federal Executive Association as well as his Regional and IRS National Offices. At retirement he was a member of the Albany Area Charter of the American Red Cross, the Federal Executive Association, and Centro Civico Hispano Americano (Albany). Edison was a life member of the State Bar of Georgia.

He entered military service in 1943 with the Army Air Corp at Biloxi, Miss. Accepted for enrollment in the Army Specialist Training Program. He reported to Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. When that program was down sized he was assigned to the 724th Field Artillery Battalion of the 69th Infantry Division, Camp Shelby, Miss, and trained as radio operator. His unit was engaged in the final battles at Leipsig.

He was a member of St. Madeleine Sophie Roman Catholic Church, Guilderland and in younger days served as head lector and member of the Parish Council and choir.

Edison married Louise Brennan on May 3, 1942, his middle school sweetheart, whom he met in French class when they were 14 years old. She passed on April 7, 2012.

Edison is survived by his loving children, Diane N. (the late Michael) Wachtel, the late Cynthia N. Rohlfs, Edison J. (Patricia) Nunez III, and James B. Nunez; his son-in-law, Arthur Rohlfs; his ten loving grandchildren, Alison (Anthony), Michael, Elizabeth (Leon), Christopher (Jessica), Timothy (Linda), Lisa (Craig), Lori, John (Jolene), Kevin, and Brian; many cherished great grandchildren and a great great grandson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and W. H. "Mac" McConnell.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center for their kindness and loving care they provided for Edison.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 29, at St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Road, Schenectady. Interment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie.
