Edith Marie Marable was born on February 27, 1932 to Bessie Vroman and Charles Aurelius Ray in Cobleskill, NY. She was raised there, attended Schoharie County schools and was baptized at Cobleskill United Methodist Church. In the early fifties, she moved from Cobleskill to Albany, N.Y. where she married James Perry Marable. From this union ten children were born: Perry James, Elaina, Vera Elizabeth, Robert Vroman, twins Arlene Ann and Arnold Charles, Bessie Ann, Jefferd Allen, Mary Elizabeth, and Issac Lon. Edith and Perry remained in Albany where they raised their children.
Edith was a gifted seamstress and baker, who loved caring for others and entertaining guests. Her gifts along with her caring, gregarious, and hospitable nature were utilized in the jobs she held. Before she entered the workforce she was trained as a child care provider at Maria College and later became employed at one of the first Head Start programs in Albany. Her culinary and hospitality gifts were utilized during her employment at Eden Park Nursing Home where she served as one of their head cooks. From there, Daka International, Inc., a food service company, utilized a combination of her talents in the role of cafeteria supervisor at the Empire State Plaza. She retired from this job in 1994.
Out of all the jobs she held, Edith found the most rewarding job was being a mother and grandparent. Her devotion and selfless love for her family was evident in her tireless commitment to providing a loving home and maintaining family traditions. The limitless love she exhibited for her family was beyond compare and will have an enduring impact for generations to come. Edith was also a woman of extraordinary strength who inspired many with her grace and poise. Her profound beauty radiated from the inside out, making a lasting impression on all those who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters Vera Stancil (Rodney), Arlene Marable Melton, Bessie Gibson, and Mary James (Edgar); two sons Robert (Marjorie), and Arnold (Loren); two brothers Charles Ray Jr., Claude Ray (Vena), and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She is predeceased by her beloved sons, Jefferd Allen, Issac Lon, and Perry James; daughter Elaina; brother, Martin James Ray; and sisters, Ethel Mae Ray, Geraldine Ray, Gesaline Ray, Martha Mae Ray, Lucy Bailey, Alice Richmond, Edna Rupert, Shirley Patrick, Roberta (Birdy) Jackson, and Wanda Landerway; and son-in-law Ricky Melton.
Visitation will be held from 9am to 11 am on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 58 Alexander St. Albany, NY 12202. A funeral service will be held at 11 am at the church. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie. For more information, visit www.NewcomerAlbany.com.
