Edward W. Conroy, Jr.

May 28, 1937 — August 26, 2023

TROY - Edward W. Conroy, Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023, into the presence of his Lord and Savior.

Ed grew up in Brewster, NY the only child of Joanna and Edward Conroy, Sr. Upon graduating as a Mechanical Engineer from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute '59, Ed was a brother of Phi Kappa Theta. Ed went on to have career that clearly demonstrated and used every facet of his incredible intellect. From his work at North American Aircraft working on B1 Bombers and F-108 Fighters to his dedicated service to our country through his work at the Benet Laboratory, US Army Research Center at the Watervliet Arsenal, Ed had a unique skill set that combined his engineering skills with a healthy curiosity for life.

After concluding his 32 year career at the arsenal, Ed started a new venture when he turned what was a hobby into a thriving business. His online book business, bearing his namesake, sold used and antique books starting in 1987. It was toward the end of his career at the arsenal, but before he started his book business that Ed finally dealt with his 30 years as a practicing alcoholic. It was then that Ed spent six months at the Rescue Mission in Syracuse in rehabilitation. It was then that he said he experienced a miracle, God instantly taking away his desire for alcohol. As of his death, Ed had been sober for 39 years - something he often shared, in hopes it would encourage others.

While Ed had many accomplishments to his credit, he was a humble soul who was most proud of his sobriety, his relationship with his Savior Jesus Christ, his close friends and the many loving dogs that graced his home over the years.

Ed lived a full and peaceful life and was characterized by those who knew him well as a philanthropist. He cared deeply for the homeless, hungry and those with addictions who had no place else to turn, especially homeless children who were the victims of their circumstance. Ed was truly love in action.

Surviving Ed are his close friends, Ed, Andrew and Meagan King.

Per Ed's request, services will be private.
