Edward Murphy

d. July 26, 2006

ALBANY – Lt. Colonel Edward F. Murphy (Ret.), 86, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at his home.
Edward was born on April 13, 1920 in Troy and was the son of the late Michael F. and Jane Manning Murphy. He graduated from CCHS in 1938. He lived in Troy until moving his family to Poestenkill in 1960.
Edward had a 38 year career in the US Army, starting with WWII. When he returned home he helped start the National Guard in Troy with General Purcell and then served at the main campus in Albany serving with the Governor's Staff at the NYS Department of Military Affairs. After retiring in 1978, he worked at Capital District Off Track Betting until 1984. He then moved to East Harwich, MA for 20 years before returning to Albany in 2005.
Edward was a 20 year member of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park, where he served as President of the first Parish Council, an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill. He enjoyed bowling, baseball, gardening, the ocean, traveling, participating in community theater events and spending time with his family. Edward grew up as a diehard New York Giants baseball fan and stayed with them even after they moved to San Francisco. However, following his move to Cape Cod, he became a passionate Boston Red Sox fan. He suffered, along with millions of others, through the frustrating seasons and then reveled in the BoSox World Series Championship in 2004.
Edward is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan A. (Cooley) Murphy; his five sons, Michael E. (Barbara) Murphy of Millbrook, NY, Fr. Dennis P. Murphy of St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Rotterdam Junction, Terence P. Murphy of Troy, Timothy S. (Michael C. LaSala) Murphy of Metuchen, NJ and Daniel B. (Amy) Murphy of East Greenbush; his grandchildren, Alison K., Sara E., Christopher J. and Jackson B. Murphy and Brian M. Brown and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Michael, Arthur, Gerard and Joseph Murphy and sisters, Mary Murphy and Sr. Jane Teresa, CSJ.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumpter Ave., Guilderland. Interment will follow at Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the church on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. The parish family of Christ the King will gather at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church for a service of prayer and remembrance.
