Eleanor Catherine Herkert

Eleanor Catherine Herkert (Farrell) age 87, of Cohoes, NY passed away after a brief illness Sunday, December 8, 2019 at The Hospice Inn, St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Ellie, as everyone knew her, was born to the late Joseph and Eva Farrell and graduated from Cohoes High School.

She met the love of her life on May 7, 1954 and 16 days later became engaged to John C. Herkert, Sr. of Melrose, NY. They were married on October 3, 1954 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Ellie is survived by her husband, John, their four children, Donna Auxter (Steve), Cheryl, John (Kimberly) and Ken; four grandchildren, Nick & Sarah Auxter and Ashley & Brett Herkert; and one great grandchild, Zari.

She took great pride when she applied for a retail job at W. T. Grant retail store in 1968 for the Christmas season in the Troy Plaza and remained there through the change in ownership from Grants, Barkers, Kings to Ames for a total of 32 years. Many of her customers became her lifelong friends. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She and Johnny treasured their retirement years playing daily games of dominoes and frequenting their favorite restaurants – Sammy Cohens and Verdiles – weekly. Not only family, but friends would call on her to light a candle asking for prayers of concern. She was known to be sweet but sassy, gentle but strong….a women of great faith.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Saturday, December 14 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm with a Celebration of Life and Blessing to immediately follow at 3:00pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY.
