COLONIE, NY – Elizabeth Ann Vadney Hathaway, 87, went home to be with the Lord on November, 26, 2011. She was born on First Avenue in Albany on May 14, 1924. She attended Public School 17, Hackett Junior High School and graduated from Phillip Schuyler High School in 1943. Elizabeth was a stenographer at Irving L. Simon and Co. in Albany. She married Richard N. Hathaway, Jr. in December 1946, and lived on O'Dell Street in Albany where her sons Robert and Brian were born. In 1953, Elizabeth accompanied her two older sons to Camp Chickamauga in Beppu, Japan following her husband's service in the Korean War. They lived on Second Avenue in Albany after their return to the United States, where Elizabeth gave birth to their third son, Richard. In 1956, they moved to their current home in Colonie where their fourth son, Marc was born. After returning to the workforce in 1964, Elizabeth was employed as an executive secretary to Eli Werlin at Urbach, Kahn & Werlin in Albany, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Albany where she was active in church affairs. Elizabeth was a member of the DAV Auxiliary, Chapter 10, and was also active in the Ranger Battalions Association of World War II with her husband, where they traveled to many Ranger reunions throughout the US and in France. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, Philip Augustus and Mary (Cunningham) Vadney; her brothers, Donald and William Vadney; her husband, Richard N. Hathaway; her son, Robert P. Hathaway and a grandson, Michael P. Hathaway. She is survived by three sons; Brian A. (Lynn) of Valrico, FL, Richard W. (Songkran) and Marc F. (Annette) of Rotterdam; one daughter-in-law, Elaine McMullen Hathaway of Wynantskill; five grandchildren; Marci Ruppert, Christopher Hathaway, Susanne Hathaway, Sara Farinas and Stephen Hathaway, as well as four step-grandchildren; Nicholas Hollenbeck, Amanda Hollenbeck, Melissa Hollenbeck Turner and Tatiya Phaettayanan; seven great-grandchildren; Emily Ruppert, Jacob Ruppert, Marcella Turner, Derek Turner, Weston Hathaway, Joseph Hathaway and Catherine Hathaway; two sisters; Rosemary Vadney Ackerman and Phyllis Vadney Smith. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. The family has requested that there be no flowers. Instead, memorial contributions would be appreciated to the Abiding Memorial of First Lutheran Church, 646 State Street, Albany, NY 12203 or Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Elizabeth A. Hathaway.
