TROY – Elizabeth Gamble Small, departed this life on Monday, July 23, 2012 at Samaritan Hospital, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Born on August 19, 1927 in Greeleyville, SC she was the daughter of the late Alcess Gamble Dukes and stepdaughter of the late Willis Dukes. She was also predeceased by her husband, Rev. Jake Small; three children, Jeanne E. Small-Fish , P.A., Dr. Zella M. Small and Benjamin Small; her siblings, Edward, James and Willie Gamble, Sr., Gertrude Ballard, Lucille Canty, Frankie Harrison and Mary Washington; seven brothers-in-law, Lee Conyers, Gene Harrison, John, Robert and Zebedee Small, Lucious Strong and Gene Washington; five sisters-in-law, Flossie and Lucille Gamble, Hattie Wease Hayward, Eloise Small and Mary Davis.
Mrs. Small is survived by her children: Angelina (John) Moore and Theresa (Albert) Blankenship all of Troy, Kathleen Small-Lopez of Manlius, NY, Carol (Roy) Harvin of Troy and Jake Small of Troy. Also surviving are her two son-in-laws, David Kennedy of East Syracuse and John Fish of Troy; two brothers, Willis Dukes of Greeleyville, SC and William (Daisy) Thomas of Troy; six sisters, Dora (Lee) Green of Greeleyville, SC, Anna Grant, Catherine Johnson and Roxy Taylor all of Baltimore, MD, Mary (Leroy) Allen and Queen Conyers of Troy; brother-in-law, Salters Ballard of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-law, Eula Mae Gibbs and Florence Strong of Myrtle Beach, SC; her dear friends, Ceola Canty, Flora Carr, Earnestine Hampton, Rosa Moore and Pearl Riggins; two godchildren, Dale Carr and Michael Pompey; two special adopted daughters, Bette (Conyers) Tomlin and Freddie (Conyers) Burns as well as twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 2900 5th Ave., Troy, NY. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy.
