Elizabeth A. Hesch

November 12, 1933 — February 7, 2020

Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Cardell-Hesch, of Schenectady, died peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2020 (age 86) after a long battle with dementia. Due to the loving care and devotion of her daughter Patricia and son-in-law, Jim, Betty was able to remain in her home for the entirety of her life.

The youngest of the three children of Frank Cardell and Marion (Scoville) Cardell, Betty was born on November 12, 1933 in Albany, NY. A month shy of her 18th birthday on October 3, 1951, Betty married Robert James Hesch. The two had four children together: Robert James Hesch Jr., John Arthur Hesch, Patricia "Patty" Ann Hesch, and Eric Joseph Hesch.

Betty was affectionately known as "Gram" by the many who knew and loved her. Her patience, loving nature, and genuine care for others drew children to Betty. She made them feel safe and loved. While the children she babysat over the years loved Betty, she loved them just as much and treated them like her own family. Even as adults, many of the children Betty watched and cared for over the years kept in contact with her.

Betty loved spending time with her family. She loved celebrating the holidays, cooking meals, playing with her grandchildren, attending family picnics and reunions, and visiting with anyone who stopped by. She was quick to make anyone feel welcomed, lend a listening ear, and give great advice.

Betty's favorite relaxation spot was the beach. She spent hours searching for seashells, looking for sealife, watching people, and enjoying the sea breeze and sunshine. Her favorite spots were Hampton Beach, New Hampshire and Oak Island, North Carolina.

Throughout her life, Betty faced many hardships. However, during these times of struggle, her unconditional love for others remained constant, unable to be extinguished by the trials of life. Betty had a special way of making everyone she spent time with feel as though they were the most special and important person in her life, and they were to Betty. Her loving nature was truly one of a kind, unconditional and genuine.

Betty is predeceased by her husband, Robert James Hesch Sr., son Robert James Hesch Jr., sister Nancy Jane Latimer, and brother Arthur Byron Cardell. She is survived by her son John (Deb), daughter Patricia (Jim), son Eric (Jerelyn), 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, as well as many others she loved as family.

A celebration of life memorial service for Betty will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Colonie Village Fire Company from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Alzheimer's Association.
