NISKAYUNA_Elizabeth Martinez, 88, passed away on May 24, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 7, 1927. Elizabeth was employed with Local 32 E (SEIU), in the Bronx, NY for over 50 years. During her employment she served on the Board of Directors, was a Union Delegate, Shop Steward and a Superintendent. Liz was very passionate about workers rights, she spent her career advocating for fair wages, safe work environment, and to make sure everyone had the proper training and technical education for the jobs they were doing.
She was a rock solid Republican her entire life. Liz believed that hard work and education were the keys to success for anyone in life.
Liz was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was certainly guilty of spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could be found waiting in the lobby for ALL of the kids (in the entire complex) to get out of school with a bag of candy. She also made sure that the kids didn't leave the candy wrappers in the hallway, if you did, you would get a stern scolding from Liz. She will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege to know and love her.
She is survived by her daughter, Hannie Santana; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Peter, Nana, Mercedes, Noemi, Anna and Elena.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, Mamie Stokes and Sam DeSayles; her beloved husband, Pedro "Pete" Martinez and her two sons, Anthony DeSayles and Sterling Lynch.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 2-4 pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A funeral service will begin at 4 pm Saturday at New Comer Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery at a later date.
