Eloise G. Hills

September 1, 1932 — October 3, 2019

Rotterdam – Eloise G. Hills, 87, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2019.

She was born on September 1, 1932, daughter of the late Theodore and Katherine Greenlaw.

Eloise was an avid collector of family lore and an amateur historian for her hometown of Warner, New Hampshire. She loved nothing so much as having a willing audience to listen to her family tales or fall victim to her little jokes, even if that person was an innocent cashier at Wal-Mart or Hannaford. We promise, she never served anyone pate made from cat food!

She was also a prolific writer, known not only for her historically-based fiction and the short stories she loved to write for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, but also her capacity for writing scathing letters to anyone she felt had wronged her. There wasn't a refund she couldn't write her way into! But perhaps her most notable talent with the pen was her habit of writing bits of what she called "doggerel." A letter from Eloise wasn't complete without a verse or two (or ten) of her trademark rhymes.

Together with her late husband, David M. Hills, Eloise raised a large family steeped in the values of hard work and family tradition. She is survived by children Kristine (Thomas) Calvaresi, Andrew (Marcia) Hills, Kathryn (David) Messler, and Donald (Eileen) Hills, as well as her brother Thomas (Royal) Greenlaw and sister Patti (Carl) McSherry. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who were the delight of her later years. Lastly, she is survived by her beloved German Shepherd dog, Pensky, who is lost without her muvva, but is being loved and cared for by family, even if they won't quite spoil her so far as sharing their bed with her.

Eloise supported a number of charitable causes, including several volunteer fire departments in honor of her late husband. If you'd like to make a donation in her name, we encourage you to give to your own local volunteer fire department.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 12:00pm.
