SCHENECTADY-Eric J. Smith, Sr., 92 passed away on September 2, 2012 at Wilkinson's Nursing Home in Amsterdam, NY. Born on April 28, 1920 in Schenectady, he was the son of the late William E. Smith and Catherine Plunz. He attended Oneida and Mount Pleasant Schools, and was then drafted in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist. After serving his country, Eric and his brother, Bill owned and operated a saw mill in Schenectady. He later went on to work as an engineer in charge for the New York State Department of Transportation, where he retired.
Eric found enjoyment in spending time with his family, hunting and fishing, whether out on a stream, lake or walking through the woods. Eric and Esther greatly enjoyed the planting and harvesting of their garden, traveling the country and just being together. He will be greatly missed.
Eric is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Esther (Wrisley) Smith of Schenectady, his daughter Christine (Smith) Unser and her spouse Eric J. Unser, Sr. of Delanson; and his son, Eric J. Smith, Jr. and Martha, of Tucson, Arizona, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Eric was predeceased by his brother William Smith and by his sisters Margaret Smith and Kathryn Brown.
A funeral service to celebrate Eric's life will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 9:00 AM at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155-South of Central Ave.)
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Memory Gardens, Colonie
