Schenectady- Ernest Carl "Ernie" Friedow, Sr., 88, entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 24, 2016. Ernest was born on October 28, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Martin and Magdalena Friedow.
Ernest worked for General Electric Company and had been retired for 29 years. He was a proud Navy veteran of WWII. Ernest was a member of the American Legion Post 1485 and the Rotterdam Elks Lodge 2157. Ernest was a devoted member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schenectady. Ernest was an active Scoutmaster for The Boy Scouts Troop #1 and Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop #7. Ernest was an Adirondack Tour Guide and a member of Mohawk Valley Hiking Club, the Sierra Club, and the 46ers. Ernest also enjoyed camping and canoeing.
In retirement, Ernest went to various disaster sites, including the 9/11 disaster, to help the American Red Cross. During his life he donated a total of 9 gallons of blood. As a member of RSVP, he transported seniors to doctor appointments and grocery stores. For many years, Ernest was a Democratic Committeeman in Schenectady.
Ernest is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Friedow, his children, Deborah Salamack (Martin) and Ernest C. Friedow, Jr. (Brenda), grandchildren, Michael Friedow (Dawn), Tiffany Friedow, Hilary Edwards (John), great-grandchildren, Jason Friedow and Grace Edwards, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 from 4pm-8pm at New Comer Funeral Home, Colonie. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Wednesday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 153 Nott Terrace, Schenectady. Interment will follow the service at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
