Esther A Allen

November 11, 1914 — April 1, 2018

Voorheesville- Esther Anderson Allen, 103, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 1, at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes. She was the daughter of the late Viggo and Alma Anderson, born in Stockholm, Sweden. At the age of 10, she came to the U.S. with her mother, through Ellis Island, where they joined her father in NYC and later settled in Lansingburgh. She graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1934.
For many years Esther worked as an assistant to local dentist, Dr. E.H. Palmer, at his Lansingburgh practice.
After WWII, Donald Allen returned home and married Esther in 1946. As a young mother Esther was devoted to her church. Don and Esther remained very active in church activities at the Dutch Reformed Church, which became The United Church of Cohoes.
Esther passed on her great love of nature and music to her children and grandchildren.
In 1987 Don and Esther moved to Voorheesville where she enjoyed country life, loved observing wildlife and took great pride in making her many flower gardens beautiful.
Esther spent her last years at the Eddy, where she will be remembered for her infectious smile and strong will. She had spunk but her smile would light up a room.
The family is grateful to the nursing and Shahbaz staff of House 22 for her care. A special thank you to Debbie, who became a dear friend and wonderful caregiver to Esther, and always showed compassion and love towards her and her family.
Special thanks also to her Pastor Nick TeBordo, from the United Church of Cohoes, for his many faithful visits, his support and friendship throughout the years and in helping her ease into her passage to her Lord.
Esther was predeceased by Donald, her husband of 55 years, in 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Allen (Gary) and Donna Bell, and her grandchildren Chris Bell (Marilyn) and Brooke Bell (Ben Broadbent), also great grandchildren Peyton and Zoie Bell and Marin and Sophia Broadbent Bell.
A memorial service to celebrate Esther's life will take place at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 13 at 10:30 am at Memory Gardens Chapel, 983 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Colonie.
