Ethel Mae Pompey, 86, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022 with her loving family by her side.
Ethel moved to Troy New York in 1955 relocating with her family from Myrtle Beach SC. She married her husband, Lee Pompey on May 25, 1956. She worked at Tiny Tots making children's clothing and then worked for over 30 years with St. Mary's Hospital in Troy NY as a transport aide until her retirement. They loving referred to her as "Momma & Pomp". Ethel was also known as the "Hat Lady" and would walk for many miles up until her 80s. She joined St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church and then New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where she loved being an Usher for over 60 years.
Ethel enjoyed playing her New York Lottery numbers, shopping, spending time with her family and loved going out to eat.
She was predeceased by her parents Jeff and Lessie Holmes, her husband Lee Pompey, her daughter, Bernadine (Charles) Carter, her siblings, Ed Holmes, Joe Cephus Holmes, Frank Holmes, James Odell Holmes, Orlena Holmes, Kathrine Willard and Bernice Brown.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter Denise (Ronald Cherry) Pompey of Troy, NY, her step children, Moses (Patricia) Conyers of Miami Fl., Laverne Conyers of Troy, NY, Debbie (Alonzo) Alexander of Troy, NY and Jerome Canty of Palm Beach, Fl. She was the proud grandmother of Julius, Amir, Jamiesha, Jarita, Alonzo Jr., Tyshawn, Jarrodd, Melissa, Justin, her sister-in-law BettyJo Holmes of Myrtle Beach, SC, her dear friends, Earnestine Hampton, Hazel Farrell, Ethel Mae Chancey, Hattie York , Mary Simon and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and family.
A funeral service will be held Monday May 2, 2022 at 11:00 am at New Hope Missionary Baptist, 2904 5th Ave., Troy, NY 12180. Burial will follow the service at Elmwood Hill Cemetery Association, Troy, New York.
