SLINGERLANDS – Fernando M. de Noronha, 86, died at home on September 11th, 2010, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and congestive heart failure.
Fernando was born on February 10th, 1924 in Santarem, Portugal, the son of the late Jeronimo and Eva de Noronha. He grew up in Portugal and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Lisbon in 1950. He worked in European countries on behalf of the Portuguese government, including Spain, Italy, France, England and Germany. He enjoyed his international career and became fluent in many languages. During his time in France he worked to control a Brucellosis outbreak and was named a Chevalier du Mérite Agricole, by the French Ministry of Agriculture in 1952 in recognition of his service to French agriculture.
In 1964 Fernando brought his family to the United States and became Associate Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, attaining the rank of Full Professor in 1968 and Professor Emeritus in 1995. During his time at Cornell he led a research program focused on feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus. He used these viruses as models for cancer and immunodeficiency research. He also served as a mentor for numerous Doctoral and Master's degree students. His many hobbies included clay pigeon shooting, hunting, archery, fly fishing, painting, carving and model airplane building.
Fernando was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Susanne Clemm de Noronha as well as his brother Pedro. He is survived by his daughter Eva Noronha Doane, her husband Berend and their children Morgen, Phoebe and Gabriel, all of New Haven, VT; and his son Carlos de Noronha, his wife Anne and their children Matthew and Ava, all of Slingerlands, NY.
No local services are planned. Interment will take place, in accordance with Fernando's wishes, in his native Portugal.
