COLONIE – Florence Emily Pierce, 98, a Colonie resident for the past 7 years, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Florence was born on November 7, 1910 in Jamaica Queens, NY and was the daughter of the late William Cater Brown and Harriet Tompkins and stepdaughter of the late Edwin Tompkins. She worked for Just One Break, Inc in NYC for 10 years where she was an employment counselor for the physically handicapped. She enjoyed spending time with her family, decorating, knitting, crocheting, winning board games, entertaining, and was an active participant in community groups. She was a member of the Star Fort Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Florence and her husband, Frank, a Major in the Army, were married at Fort McClellan in Anniston Alabama in 1941. She then moved back to New York City where she raised her first child, Don, for 3 years by herself while her husband was in Saipan during WWII. Once her children were grown, she traveled the country with Frank as he ran fundraising campaigns for a variety of clients. New York remained her home until she and her husband retired to Greenwood, SC where they were surrounded by family and friends. Once her husband passed, she moved to Albany, NY to live with her daughter, Lola, and to be with her grandchildren. She was a wonderful and giving woman who will be sorely missed by friends and family alike. We will always love you Mom.
Florence is the mother of Lola A. Tramontano of Albany and Donald Pierce of Ramsey, MN. Grandmother of Brian Tramontano, Christine Faga and her husband Angelo, Brenton Pierce and his partner Allison Sanjo, and Bronwyn Fuerstenberg and her husband Jeff. Great grandmother of Samuel Joseph Faga and Matthew Joseph Faga. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Frank Derby Pierce.
