Albany- Florence May Eliza Dennis, 87, passed away on July 21, 2015.
Florence Dennis, affectionately called "Mama," "Granny," "Sister Dennis," or simply, "Florence," was born in Sunning Hill, St. Thomas, Jamaica on May 11, 1928 to parents Charles Dennis and Naomi Edwards.
She lived a happy and productive life in Jamaica as a prominent vendor of fruits and vegetables to many businesses and individuals. She immigrated to the United States in 1994 to pave a way for her children to follow.
Shortly after settling in the United States, Sister Dennis became a member of the Albany Church of God of Prophecy and the church's Mother's Board. As an avid member of the Mother's Board, Sister Dennis enjoyed participating in Mother's Board programs and other events such as the annual Ladies' Enrichment Conference.
Granny loved to dance! She danced at church, in stores, home—wherever she heard music. She even sang and danced to her own songs.
Granny was an excellent caregiver—everyone was her son, daughter or grandchild. She always made sure everyone was well taken care of—even strangers. She always remembered everyone's birthdays and "wrapped up" a $5.00 in a card to give to him or her.
In addition to sharing her love, Mama enjoyed sharing her food. Some of her favorite dishes included fried dumplings, fried chicken, chocolate tea and bread. Her youthfulness and wit will be deeply missed.
Her mother, Naomi Edwards and siblings Peter Dennis and Rose Levy preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children: Edna Gordon; David McKay; Viola McKay; Kenroy McKay; Joseph McKay; Winston Swaby; Nehemiah Swaby; Pauline Swaby and Paulette Swaby.
Grandchildren: Samuel Gordon, Roselyn McIndoe; Wilton Gordon; Hugh Gordon; Ina Stanton; Quinton Gordon; Milford Donaldson; Marvel Donaldson; Melissa Swaby; Winston Swaby; Tashna Swaby; Michael Swaby; Tajera Morgan; Camoy Morgan; Omar McKay and Kenroy McKay, Jr.
