GUILDERLAND – Francesco Genovesi, 94, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Francesco "Frank" was born on November 16, 1916 in Gualtieri Sicamino' Messina, Italy and was the son of the late Santo and Francesca (Scopelliti) Genovesi. He was educated in Italy. At the age of nine he started playing French horn and kettle drums in the town band. He also acted as town Mayor in the early 50's. He was in the Italian Air Force in Rome. He also served in the Campaign of Africa in Tobruk, Libya during WWII.
He owned his own furniture making business, then worked in Venezuela as a cabinet maker and in 1967 was requested to come to the USA as a skilled cabinet maker and worked for Carl Paulsen Lumber and Miron Lumber in Colonie.
Francesco's favorite pastime was gardening, taking long walks, making inlaid furniture and spending cherished time with his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retiring he enjoyed traveling to his home in Sicily, Italy and because of his loving devotion to our Lady Mary he made several pilgrimages to Fatima and Lourdes.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Caterina Curró Genovesi and his brothers, Santino and Nicola Genovese.
Francesco is survived by his son, Santo Genovesi and his wife Anna of Guilderland; his beloved grandchildren, Caterina "Cathy" (Vincent) Nevasini of Rexford, Rosanna (Eddie Salisbury) Genovesi of Albany, Francesco (Michelina) Genovesi of Troy, and Cristina Genovesi (Matt Shannon) of Guilderland; his beloved great-grandchildren, Brianna, Anthony, Katina, Matthew, Nicholas, and Gianni; his sister, Teresa Genovesi and his brother, Giuseppe Genovese both of Italy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to Community Hospice of Schenectady, Joan Nicole Prince Home, and to St. Peter's Hospice Inn for the wonderful care given to Francesco.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, then to St. Vincent de Paul's Church, 900 Madison Ave., Albany where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will take place in Italy at the convenience of the family.
